The East village is what used to be the northern most part of the Lower East side. In the late 50’s early 60’s with a change in the composition of the residents, both residents & realtors alike began calling this area east of Greenwich Village as the East village to differentiate this area from the working class lower east side. The residents of the East Village developed a culture more akin to that of Greenwich Village yet different and the name stuck.
